HMAS HOBART ASSOCIATION
(WA Division)

HMAS Hobart I was a 6” Light Cruiser. She was purchased from the UK in WW II and was commissioned in the RAN from1938 to 1947. Hobart was Attached to both the RN and USN during different stages of the the war. Sh also fought in the Battle of the Coal Sea

HMAS Hobart II was an US built Charles F Adams Guided Missile Destroyer. Purchased new from the US .Shortly after arriving in Australia she was deployed to Vietnam and was attached to the US 7th Fleet. She assisted in providing gunfire support to the troops ashore. In later Yeats she was all patrolling the Persian Gulf

Shortly after WW II the ex crews of HMAS Hobart I decided to form an association in every state. The associations were independent of each other but cooperated with each other for reunions. The plan being they could keep touch with old crew mates get together for AGM’s and after the ANZAC Day march. Every now and again reunions were organized to renew old friendships with interstate members

The ex crew members Hobart I kept the membership going into probably the late seventies. In the 70’s and 80’s ex crew members from Hobart II started joining and taking over the reigns. Probably around the 80’s membership in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania fell off and their respective association were wound up. NSW QLD and WA Membership still remained strong

Over the last five years all Hobart I crew members have passed away and many Hobart II as well. It has depleted our membership considerably and we have not been able to attract any new members. The lack of members was discussed at our AGM in February 2021. It was decided. to give the association one more year and if no new member joined we would wind up the association. Sadly no members joined so we decided to wind up We had a little money in our account and it was unanimously decided to donate it to Legacy. The money has been transferred to Legacy as of 14 April 2022
